Jamie Carragher trolls 115-charge Man City on live TV
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher called out Manchester City's 115 charges for breaching financial rules during a live broadcast on Tuesday.
The former defender turned pundit was predicting the outcome of this season's Champions League on CBS, tipping City to go all the way and defend their crown.
Going game by game through the draw from the quarters through to the final, Carragher picked Bayern Munich to knock out Arsenal citing "European experience", while he went for City to overcome Real Madrid, a Kylian Mbappe-inspired PSG to oust Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to see off Dortmund.
Carra then plumped for PSG and City to make the Wembley final, before cheekily adding: "And the winner is the team with 115 charges... Manchester City!"
CBS posted the clip to their X account alongside the caption: "OMG Carra really went there".
In the studio, Carra's dig led to an audible 'wow' from fellow pundit and Manchester City ambassador Micah Richards, while host Kate Abdo could be seen laughing.
Elephant in the room
Carragher's comment references the fact that last year City were charged with breaching Premier League financial rules 115 times over a nine-year period.
An undisclosed date has been set for a hearing into City’s breaches.
While the club maintains their innocence, the scale and seriousness of the charges put a cloud over the nature of City's recent dominance.
Former Premier League striker turned pundit Ian Wright called the charges 'an elephant in the room', as he discussed Pep Guardiola's legacy at the Etihad Stadium in comparison with Jurgen Klopp's work at Liverpool.
"You look at the trophy haul and you have to say that Pep's done very well. But then you look at what Klopp's done to try to catch Manchester City, the way he's built that team, how long it's taken them to get there," he said on Sky Sports back in March.
"You have to say, it might be easier for Pep in what he's done, but Klopp's still got to get a lot of love. It's there for everyone to see in respect of trophies but we can't speak about City without speaking about the fact there's 115 charges around them.
"The one thing I would like more than anything else is for that to be gone so you can give the team and the manager the love they deserve. You speak about them and it's like there's an elephant in the room.
"You want to speak about them, with this rivalry, without saying 'yeah....', it's not fair on the players, it's not fair on the club. The sooner that's gone, the better for them, but you can't look at the amount of trophies and say that Guardiola's not done better."
City Group's £112m loss
Meanwhile, the City Football Group (CFG) — the parent company of the Premier League champions and 11 other clubs across five continents — posted losses of £112m for the 2022/23 financial year, despite generating revenue of £877.1m, earlier this month.
Sports Pro Media notes that the Man City only accounts show a revenue of £712.6m — a new Premier League record.
