Trent Alexander-Arnold future named as Liverpool's 'biggest worry'

Jamie Carragher admits he's most worried about the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool. The right-back has 18 months left.

Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement that he's leaving Liverpool at the end of the season has thrown everything up into the air at the club. Not only is Klopp leaving, but his senior coaching staff are off, too, while sporting director Jorg Schmadtke is departing with the end of his contract.

And that's just the off-pitch people. The Reds also have some concerns on-pitch as three vital players are into the final 18 months of their contracts.

Not just any players, either, but arguably the most important three outfield players. Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all coming to the end of their contracts.

Jamie Carragher, though, feels one of these players is a bigger priority than the other two - Alexander-Arnold.

“Virgil van Dijk is not the biggest worry and neither is Mo Salah. It’s Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Carragher told the Overlap. “Those three players have 18 months to go. In 18 months Salah and Van Dijk will be 34 or 35. So this thing about we could lose Van Dijk, well it might actually be the right decision in 18 months.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is the one you have almost got to build this team around for a new manager. I think Van Dijk and Salah in 12 months’ time, the club will probably look at that and go you have six months to go, how are you feeling as a player.

"You would want to keep them if they are playing as they are right now, but 18 months is a long time in football.”

This is absolutely the right attitude from Carragher - Alexander-Arnold is the priority here purely on his age. He's the one who could sign a five-year deal and essentially guarantee the club five excellent years.

But more than that, Alexander-Arnold is particularly priceless to Liverpool. He's a complete homegrown player for the Reds, having come through the academy. Such players - even those just trained in England - carry a premium for English clubs anyway.

When that player is also one of the absolute best in the world, you just can't afford to lose them. Liverpool will have Alexander-Arnold at the top of their summer list and for good reason - losing him is not an option.
