Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool are two players away from challenging for the Premier League title again, while identifying the area in which Manchester City are still superior.

The Reds struggled to a 1-1 draw away at Luton Town on Sunday afternoon, with Luis Diaz's stoppage-time equaliser salvaging a point after Tahith Chong shocked the visitors with the opener on the counter attack after 80 minutes.

It was a frustrating day at the office for Liverpool, who failed to take their chances and were caught out by Rob Edwards' hardworking side.

Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp claimed that he took Liverpool's particularly poor first-half display 'personally', while admitting his team weren't 'calm' enough to finish the opportunities they created.

The draw saw Liverpool miss out on the chance to gain ground on Manchester City and Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table, with Klopp's side travelling to the Etihad at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Reds legend Carragher identified Liverpool's off-the-ball work defensively as a weakness when compared to City – one that could prove costly in a title race.

"Liverpool still aren’t as good as Man City at stopping counter-attacks," the former defender said on Sky Sports. "Liverpool are a team who dominate possession, they have a lot of the ball, but they’re not quite as good as Man City off the ball so there are more turnovers and they lose the ball."

Carragher also claimed the Reds still need another defensive midfielder and versatile defender in order to be able to compete at the very top level.

He continued: "Liverpool in midfield are improved from what we saw last season, but they still haven’t got a top holding midfielder. In the back four, Liverpool could do with not so much a player for a specific position, but just a great defender who can almost play in a couple of positions.

"Liverpool are not ready to win the league. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters know that right now. They want to get back into the top four. In terms of challenging again, I think they need a holding midfielder and a top-class defender."
