Jamie Carragher claims Diogo Jota might be better than Salah, Suarez & Torres in one area

Jamie Carragher waxed lyrical about Diogo Jota after the forward scored twice in Liverpool's 4-0 win away at Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Reds were not expected to run away with the tie at the Vitality Stadium, with Andoni Iraola's side in good form.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side put on a second-half clinic, with doubles from Jota and Darwin Nuñez coming after the break.

The win solidifies Liverpool's position at the top of the Premier League table, while the scoreline showed that the Reds are able to thrive even without the likes Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Carragher was particularly impressed with Jota, with the 27-year-old taking his goals tally to 11 this season in all competitions, despite only making 13 starts.

Since returning from injury last month, the former Wolves forward – who also grabbed an assist on Sunday – has six goal contributions in five outings.

Carragher told Sky Sports after Sunday's performance: "[He has] a goal or an assist every 84 minutes [this season], there’s only two or three players in the Premier League who are higher than that.”

The Liverpool legend also made the big claim that Jota may well be the best pure finisher the club has had in modern history.

He continued: “Thinking of some of the strikers I’ve played alongside: Michael Owen, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler, I think he’s [Jota] the best finisher.

“Finishing-wise I think he’s as good if not better than Torres, even a Suarez, even Salah.

“Maybe the only one who could probably compete with him is Robbie Fowler in the early days of the Premier League.”

While injuries have interrupted Jota's time at Liverpool since his move in 2020, he still has 38 Premier League goals in 91 outings – with 15 of those coming in the 2021/22 season when he was able to make 35 appearances.

With seven in 15 so far in 2023/24, Jota is on track to beat his personal best, if he stays fit and gets the games

Carragher added of the former Wolves and Porto star: “He sums up Liverpool’s recruitment. People always say Liverpool’s recruitment’s great, sometimes there’s really good players out there and you go and buy them. He’s a player who was in and out the Wolves team and when he was bought a lot of people were scratching their heads thinking ‘I don’t get that.

“Liverpool looked at maybe the underlying numbers, where he took his shots from, how many times he took shots, his xG, these type of things that Liverpool really looked into, you look at it and you think: that’s a steal.”
