James Pearce provides an update on Caoimhin Kelleher's future

Journalist James Pearce has provided an update on Caoimhin Kelleher's future.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper is currently behind Alisson in the pecking order at Anfield. Therefore, Kelleher only made eight appearances for Liverpool's first-team last season.

Despite that being the case, Liverpool are not planning on allowing the Irishman to depart the club in any capacity this summer, according to Pearce.

He told The Athletic the following: "Caoimhin Kelleher is developing into a fantastic goalkeeper. He will undoubtedly be a number one at the top level in the coming years but Liverpool want to hold on to him as long as possible because he’s a brilliant deputy for Alisson. It was a smart move by Klopp giving him the honour of starting the Carabao Cup final (against Chelsea at Wembley last season) and that faith was rewarded.

"Kelleher is still only 23 so hopefully it will be another year at least before he moves on. The goalkeeping department will have a new look to it this season with Marcelo Pitaluga loaned out and Loris Karius having left on a free. Adrian, Klopp’s third-choice, has one more year on his contract."

Anfield Watch Verdict

We strongly believe that Kelleher will depart Anfield in the near future. Pearce's comments suggest that to be the case anyway.

The reality is, the goalkeeper needs to be playing regular senior football to improve, and he will know that.

Alisson is contracted until the summer of 2027. He's going nowhere anytime soon.

As Pearce said, the 23-year-old possesses talent, so it would be a shame to lose him. But, only time will tell where Kelleher's future lies.
