James Pearce believes that Liverpool will revamp their midfield come the summer.

The journalist has made it clear that James Milner is considering his future. The 36-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

Pearce further added that there is uncertainty surrounding the futures of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Both players' contracts expire at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign. With that being the case, Pearce can see Reds boss Jurgen Klopp reinforcing his midfield this summer.

He told The Red Agenda Podcast the following: “Milner is obviously considering his options with the age he’s at, thinking whether or not he’ll feature much next season. (Jordan) Henderson has a few years left in him, Fabinho will be a mainstay in the midfield for years to come and Thiago (Alcantara) is the wrong side of 30 now.

“We spoke earlier about Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain, that’s an intriguing one for me, what do you do there? Do you give out new contracts this summer or do you move them on? Or do you accept they’ll leave for nothing next year. The midfield is an area I see Liverpool reinforcing this summer, because the likelihood is that one of those midfielders will leave, if not two.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Pearce's comments highlight why Liverpool need to sign a midfielder in the near future. The reality is, it's highly likely that the club will lose at least two midfielders in the near future.

Also, Liverpool never replaced Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman left Anfield for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer.

Yes, the club has two youngsters in Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones coming through the ranks. But, we would like to see a senior midfielder or two added to the ranks to replace Wijnaldum and a potential departee.

We don't want too much pressure put on Elliott and Jones. They are only kids (18 and 21 years of age respectively) at the end of the day.
