Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius will depart the club in the summer, according to The Athletic's James Pearce, as cited by Anfield Edition's Twitter account.

The 28-year-old has not played for the Reds' first-team since the 2018 Champions League final, which took place in Kiev.

Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 on the night. Karius was at fault for two of the three goals that the Reds conceded against the Spanish giants.

Karius has had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin since the 2018 Champions League final. But, the shot-stopper will leave Anfield on a permanent basis come the summer, according to Pearce.

Karius' contract expires at the conclusion of the current campaign, which means that he will be able to depart the club on a free transfer.

Anfield Watch Verdict

Liverpool signed Karius from Mainz for a transfer fee of €6.20 million back in the summer of 2016.

The goalkeeper has only made 49 appearances for the club's first-team. Unless Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian are all ruled out with injury/illness at the same time, Karius will never play another game for the Reds.

It is a shame that the 28-year-old never quite made it at Anfield. Footage of the German highlights that he does possess talent.

In fact, Karius was named the second-best Bundesliga goalkeeper by his fellow professionals back in 2016.

The 2018 Champions League final has do doubt impacted his career quite negatively. Karius has not been the same since.

Hopefully the shot-stopper can turn things around and get back to his best. As we have already pointed out, Karius is only 28 years of age, which does highlight that his career is far from over.

It will be interesting to see where the Liverpool goalkeeper ends up. We wish Karius all the best for the future. One a Red, always a Red.
