James Maddison injury update ahead of Liverpool clash

Tottenham await the results of a scan on James Maddison's knee after the midfielder suffered an awkward 'jolt' during Sunday's North London Derby.

Maddison, who has been one of Spurs' standout players so far in 2023/24, was on form again at the weekend, assisting Son Heung-Min twice in the 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

26-year-old Maddison now has six goal involvements for the season and will be one of the danger men when Liverpool travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, if he is fit to play.

The former Leicester star is a minor doubt, having come off on 78 minutes against Arsenal, a few minutes after a freak incident in which his knee appeared to be pushed backwards during a duel with Jorginho.

The midfielder, who has been playing through other knocks in recent weeks, went for a scan on his knee on Monday to assess the damage. However, according to football.london the initial feeling is 'positive'.

Speaking after the game, Maddison appeared to play down the incident: "Yeah I jolted my knee, Jorginho kicked my knee and my leg just jolted a bit. I've done about six interviews and haven't actually seen the physios yet so I'm going to get it checked out in a sec."

Manager Ange Postecoglou also tried to ally fears that his number 10 could be forced to the sidelines for upcoming games.

He told football.london: "Madders and Sonny weren't 100% going into the game but they got through it which suggests that it's nothing serious."

Liverpool travel to Tottenham on Saturday for what promises to be the Reds' biggest test of the Premier League season so far.

After their draw with Arsenal, Spurs remain unbeaten in 2023/24 and sit fourth in the table, two points behind Liverpool.

Brennan Johnson is another injury doubt for Tottenham for the weekend. The former Nottingham Forest forward was substituted with a possible hamstring injury in the draw at Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp will hope to welcome back vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold who has been out since before the international break with his own hamstring issue. Thiago Alcantara remains the Reds only other major first-team absentee.
