Pundit Ian Wright has given his opinion on the treatment that Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez received against Crystal Palace at Anfield last Monday night.

The Uruguay international was pushed and shoved by Eagles defender Joachim Andersen. Nunez reacted by headbutting the 26-year-old during the second half of the Premier League clash.

Nunez was shown a straight red card as a result. Wright had the following to say about the incident.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, he told the Liverpool Echo: "It’s the kind of thing that Dennis Bergkamp got. The last thing people say about Dennis is ‘yeah he’s got to have a bit of a nasty side about him’ you’ve got to have that in you naturally.

"When Dennis came, when I used to speak to him because we used to room together you’d speak to him and say ‘Dennis, even if you feel like it’s a foul, you have got to make them do more to see that this is not going to get you’.

"Because what happened to us, Dennis’ first like 10 games until Southampton where he scored two great goals, he was targeted.

"That’s what’s going to happen to Nunez. Absolutely. What I said was Liverpool, I think their red card offences are very minimal, when's the last time you saw a team in the top echelons of their league possess a player with a fuse that can go like that. You just don’t see it.

"I was astonished but at the same time when you look how Andersen played him, he played a blinder on him."

Anfield Watch Verdict

Wright is absolutely spot on in his assessment of the incident involving Nunez. The striker will be targeted by opposition centre-backs.

Everyone now knows that Nunez has a short fuse. But, the 23-year-old will have to learn to control his emotions going forward.

Otherwise, Nunez will find it difficult to have a consistent impact in the most physical league in world football.

It will be interesting to see how the Uruguay international goes about his business now that he has received a straight red card in only his third appearance for Liverpool's first-team.
