"It's personnel" - Graeme Souness defends Jurgen Klopp

Pundit Graeme Souness has defended Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp during a recent radio stint.

The Reds have only accumulated 10 points from a possible 24 to begin the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.

Souness believes that the players have let Klopp down in the early stages of the season. The former Liverpool player also touched on the club's midfielders.

“If you’ve had success, going down a certain road, do you all of a sudden change it? It’s personnel. It’s not him," he told talkSPORT (10 October, 10.40am UK time).

“One (area) where I think they’ve made a mistake is the midfield; screaming out for strengthening. You’ve got Thiago Alcantara, 31, Jordan Henderson, 32, (James) Milner, (nearly) 37. (Naby) Keita, for me, isn’t good enough.

“I think that’s a fairly obvious area where you need to strengthen.”

Souness is spot on. The same players competed for the quadruple last season. A football side does not become a bad team overnight.

Also, we completely agree with Souness' concerns regarding the midfield. As he pointed out, the aforementioned players are all ageing. Therefore, they aren't improving.

So, the Reds will certainly have to invest in their midfield in the near future. Only time will tell if that is to be the case.

The reality is, other teams are improving and Liverpool are not. Something needs to change.

Hopefully Liverpool can turn their season around.
