"It's good" - Fabinho opens up on his role for Liverpool
Liverpool's Fabinho has provided an insight into why he enjoys playing as a holding midfielder.
The Reds signed the Brazil international from Monaco for a transfer fee of €45 million back in the summer of 2018.
Since then, Fabinho has gone on to make 158 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.
The Reds have won five major trophies with the 28-year-old playing as a No.6.
Fabinho has recently implied that he enjoys playing at the heart of Liverpool's midfield because he is involved in all aspects of the game.
As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the Brazilian told UEFA the following: “I receive the ball a lot and I'm involved in the creation process. It's good because I always have the ball, and I'm always very involved in transitions between defence and attack.
“I also like the fact that there are plays and movements that I can anticipate to intercept some passes. I like to steal the ball, take the ball from the other team.
“Depending on where you win the ball, you can put a team-mate through into a good attacking position. I think that's what I enjoy doing the most.
“Attacking players always grab the headlines because they score goals and have better overall attacking statistics, so it's normal.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Fabinho's assessment of the No.6 position is spot on. You have to be good in attack and defence to successfully play as a holding midfielder.
There is no denying that Fabinho has been able to perform for Liverpool playing as a No.6, especially in recent times. He has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.02 across the 2021-22 club campaign.
The Brazil international is contracted until June 2026. With that being the case, Fabinho has the opportunity to win a few more trophies with the club.
Hopefully the 28-year-old can continue to be one of Liverpool's standout players in the years to come.
