"It is madness to say that" - Jurgen Klopp on Alexander-Arnold's critics

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has backed Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive abilities.

The right-back has copped plenty of criticism regarding his capabilities without the ball. But, Alexander-Arnold helped Liverpool secure a clean sheet and a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last night.

The Scouser completed two tackles and two interceptions during the aforementioned Premier League clash. Alexander-Arnold also registered a WhoScored player rating of 7.23 against Arsenal.

With that being the case, Klopp took aim at the 23-year-old's critics post-game.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the 54-year told the club's official website the following: "If people say Trent can't defend, sorry but it is madness to say that. To play against (Gabriel) Martinelli like that - one v one situations constantly, these were the winners today. We needed to defend those. "We have to agree on defence first. It's a clear agreement otherwise you are like any other team you win or you lose. We've had games we've won 1-0 we wouldn't win if we were not spot on. The two full-backs were insane."

Anfield Watch Verdict

There is no denying that Alexander-Arnold is very good going forward. The right-back has found the back of the net 12 times and registered 60 assists in 214 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

But, we do agree with Klopp that Alexander-Arnold is a capable defender. Footage backs up the aforementioned argument.

On another note, Alexander-Arnold has had a superb start to his senior Liverpool career. The 23-year-old has already won five major trophies with the Reds.

The scary thing about Alexander-Arnold's career is that it's far from over. He could easily go on to win several more trophies with the club.

We don't expect Alexander-Arnold to ever depart Liverpool, as he is a boyhood fan of the club. Therefore, we look forward to watching the youngster in the years to come.
