"It hurts" - Alan Shearer on Liverpool's 2021-22 campaign
Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Liverpool's 2021-22 campaign.
The Reds did secure the League Cup and FA Cup this season. However, Liverpool finished as runners-up in the Premier League and Champions League.
Despite that being the case, Shearer believes that Jurgen Klopp's side still had a very good campaign.
As quoted by Empire of the Kop, he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast the following: “It hurts and it hurts a lot.
“To have the disappointment of losing out in the league, despite performing so well, and then to have this (Champions League defeat) disappointment also.
“As much as it hurts, after the season they have had – bringing two trophies back to Anfield – they can still be very proud of what they have achieved.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Shearer is spot on. Klopp's team can certainly be proud of what they have achieved in recent times.
It is unlikely that we will ever see a Liverpool team compete for the quadruple again. It is not an easy thing to do.
But, it was disappointing to see the Reds fail to secure the two biggest trophies in club football this season.
What made it slightly easier to take is that we have already seen Liverpool win the Premier League and Champions League under Klopp's guidance.
The team clearly have some perspective, as they did rock up to the parade in Liverpool the day after the European Cup final in good spirits.
It is a brilliant team we get to watch on the weekly basis. They are all good footballers, but they are even better people.
We do welcome the break from club football, as it has been a very intense season. However, we can't wait to see the Reds back in action.
