"Interesting one" - Gary Neville on Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Reece James
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has given his opinion on who the better full-back is out of Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea's Reece James.
The 47-year-old said that Alexander-Arnold is the better player right now. However, Neville believes that James has the potential to overtake the Scouser.
“Trent or Reece? That’s an interesting one, by the way,” he said on Instagram (13:15).
“Trent is far better on the ball. He’s better than everyone on the ball. He’s better than most, to be fair. Midfield players and wingers on the ball.
“But I think Reece James, injury-free for a couple of seasons, could surpass Trent as an all-round fullback. He needs to stay fit for a few seasons.
“I do think Trent has improved his defending, I would say in the last three to four weeks. He has been a lot more aggressive in getting to the ball.
“I think, between them both, they are both outstanding. But Trent, at the moment, edges it and Reece has the ability to overtake.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We believe that it is always better to compare players at the end of their careers. All we will say is that Alexander-Arnold is a world-class talent.
As Neville implied, the full-back is a defender by trade. But, he is terrific going forward.
Alexander-Arnold has scored two goals and registered 12 assists in 31 Premier League appearances this season.
Despite the fact that the Scouser is only 23 years of age, he has won six major trophies with Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold has already achieved so much in his short football career. However, the reality is, he could accomplish a lot more.
Only time will tell if that is to occur.
