Liverpool 'interested' in summer move for Bayern Munich star
Liverpool and Manchester City are both interested in Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich this summer, according to a report.
The 28-year-old is one of the continent's top midfielders, having won eight Bundesliga titles and the 2019/20 Champions League.
Kimmich is set to enter the final year of his contract in Munich this summer, while he is yet to reach an agreement over an extension.
This year could present the final chance for the reigning German champions to cash in on one of their top assets, or risk the possibility of losing him for free in 18 months' time.
According to journalist Christian Falk of Sport Bild, both Liverpool and City are 'interested' in Kimmich and monitoring his situation ahead of a potential move this summer.
He said: "Thiago is always injured at Liverpool and his contract is running out, [Jordan] Henderson has left, there is a bit of space in midfield and Jurgen Klopp of course knows how important Kimmich is.
‘[Jorg] Schmadtke, the sporting director [at Liverpool], has good connections in the Bundesliga. So, Klopp is also now in the race for Kimmich."
Falk later added that Paris Saint-Germain are another European giant in the mix for Kimmich's signature.
While Liverpool under FSG and Klopp have generally tended to go for younger and less expensive signings, there have been exceptions to the rule, most notably the deal to bring Thiago to Anfield from Bayern back in 2020.
The then 29-year-old was signed in a £20m deal and given a four-year contract that made him one of the Reds' top earners.
In addition to Kimmich, the Reds have also been linked to his Munich teammate Leroy Sane in recent months. The former Manchester City winger's contract is also due to expire in the summer of 2025 and another player whose future remains up in the air.
Interestingly, both Liverpool and City have also been linked to another deep-lying midfielder in Porto's Alan Varela, who has a release clause of €70m (£60m).
