Impressive Dominik Szoboszlai stat highlights defensive impact at Liverpool

To say Dominik Szoboszlai has made a quick start to life at Liverpool would be an understatement.

The Reds' £60m summer signing arrived at Anfield with big expectations, needing to make an instant impact to help revolutionise Jurgen Klopp's midfield ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The Hungarian made an immediate difference on Merseyside and it could easily be argued that Liverpool's No. 8 is the signing of last summer's transfer window in the Premier League.

Szoboszlai has provided six goal contributions this term already, most recently scoring in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. However, those numbers don't really tell the true tale of his influence at Anfield.

Utilised in a box-to-box role, the former RB Leipzig man has been required to do his fair share of defensive work this season in Liverpool's new-look midfield.

Given that Szoboszlai has started every single one of the Reds' Premier League matches, Jurgen Klopp is clearly happy with his contributions in both halves of the pitch.

In fact, according to WhoScored, Szoboszlai has won possession more times (112) than any other player in the Premier League this season, including the likes of Manchester City's Rodri and Arsenal's Declan Rice.

Despite it perhaps not being his primary function in the Liverpool team, Szoboszlai's work ethic and energy have been crucial to the Reds' success this season, plugging many of the holes that were gaping last year.

Liverpool's midfield has been much tougher to bypass at the beginning of the campaign, one of the reasons they find themselves top of the table, and Szoboszlai has proved pivotal in the engine room.

Given the 23-year-old has adapted to his new role so quickly and offered wonderful balance to Klopp's midfield already, the dynamo is only likely to improve with each passing game in a red shirt.
