"I'm not too loyal" - Jurgen Klopp sends defiant message to underperforming Liverpool squad

Jurgen Klopp has indicated that Liverpool could revamp their squad this summer as they continue to endure a frustrating 2022-23 campaign on all fronts. The Reds have been ravaged by injuries and inconsistency this season and are currently ninth in the Premier League with just 28 points from 18 games.

Ahead of the FA Cup replay against Wolves, Klopp gave his assessment of the current Liverpool squad and indicated that wholesale changes could be on the way at the end of the season.

As cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the Liverpool manager also brushed aside claims that he's 'too loyal' to the players who have served him so well over the years.

"I'm not too loyal. I am loyal, but not too loyal. If you can bring in another player to replace him, it makes sense to [phase a player out]. If you can't bring anyone in, you can't have anyone go out.

"The problem is too complex. If you have a good player who had a lot of good stuff in the past, and in your mind, you think it's that time - if you can go out and bring in another player, it makes sense.

"If you cannot bring anyone in, you can't bring anyone out. It's an intelligent question, but the problem is what you all make of the answer. I am not too loyal.

"As far as I am concerned, if nobody tells me to go, I will not go. That means maybe there is a point where we have to change other stuff."

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Jurgen Klopp has won it all at Liverpool with virtually the same group of players, so it's not hard to understand why people would think he's unbelievably loyal to his players. However, a handful of players seem to be running on their last legs, indicating that we must hit the reset button.

Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Roberto Firmino have entered the final six months of their contracts, while Arthur Melo is likely to return to Juventus at the end of the season after an injury-laden loan spell in Merseyside.

With the average age of the squad at an all-time high, Klopp faces the tough task of telling some of his trusted lieutenants that their futures lie elsewhere. The German tactician already built one incredible squad that won every major honor in club football, so there's no reason why he couldn't do the same again, considering he signed a new deal until 2026 to oversee the transition.
