“If Raheem Sterling was available" - Ian Rush on former Red

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has suggested that the club should consider making a move for Manchester City winger and former Red Raheem Sterling.

As things stand, the 27-year-old will be a free agent at the conclusion of next season. It was reported at the backend of last year that Sterling was open to leaving Manchester City due to a lack of playing time.

The England international has made 13 appearances from the bench this season (42 matches all up).

With that being the case, Rush said that he would not be against Liverpool attempting to re-sign Sterling.

However, the 60-year-old further added that he does not see the forward and the club reconnecting.

“If Raheem Sterling was available on a free transfer next summer, would I take him back at Liverpool? On a professional basis, you’d have to say he’d improve the squad," Rush told the Liverpool Echo, as cited by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

“I can’t see it happening though because free transfers generally come with enormous wage demands and, since Sterling will be 28 next summer, it’s not the sort of deal the Liverpool owners like to buy in to.

“I can’t see Liverpool going in for him, if I’m honest, but any of the other top teams in the league – or abroad – could do a lot worse than signing Sterling on a free if he were to run his contract down next year.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Sterling is a good footballer. There is a reason why the winger has scored 128 goals and registered 93 assists in 334 appearances for Manchester City.

But, we can't forget that Sterling did force a move away from Anfield to join the Citizens back in the summer of 2015.

Therefore, we don't want to see Sterling playing for Liverpool again.
