“If I take a path similar to him" - Jay Spearing on emulating Steven Gerrard
Jay Spearing has opened up on emulating Steven Gerrard.
The 33-year-old took up a player/coach role at Liverpool earlier this summer. Gerrard did something very similar back in 2017 before becoming the manager of Rangers.
The 42-year-old won the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership with the Glasgow-based club. Gerrard is now in charge of Aston Villa.
Spearing is hoping to emulate the Liverpool legend.
“If I take a path similar to him, I would be very fortunate," he told the club's official website.
“I will strive and work hard to go and get that. Right now, all I can do is concentrate on the journey and the opportunity I have been given. I will learn and see what comes.
“There is a lot of hard work ahead but the end goal is to get myself out there in the big wide world of the professional game.
“Steven was one of the people who passed on the message to say ‘Good luck and learn’ after I was appointed.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
It does not surprise us that Spearing looks up to Gerrard. The 42-year-old has achieved quite a fair bit in his short time as a manager.
Spearing is certainly a passionate Liverpool man. Before leaving Anfield on a permanent basis back in 2013, he made 55 appearances for the club's first-team.
So, we do hope that things work out for Spearing during his second spell at Liverpool. But, only time will tell if that is to be the case.
We wish Spearing all the best heading into the future.
