Ian Wright is backing Liverpool in the title race for one reason

Premier League legend Ian Wright has said he 'fancies' Liverpool for the title this season, following the Reds' impressive win over Bournemouth.

Jurgen Klopp's side put four past the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, with all the goals coming after half-time.

The win put Liverpool five points clear at the top of the table, and on a five-match winning streak in all competitions.

Defending champions Manchester City may have a game in hand, but Wright – a Premier League winner in 1998 – has said that the Reds' experience can help them this season.

“Liverpool have trod these boards before. They know what to do,” the former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker said on the podcast Wrighty’s House.

“And no Trent [Alexander-Arnold], no [Mohamed] Salah. And I thought that Bournemouth game was going to be a tough one. But can I just say, Darwin Nunez, whatever anyone says, ten goals, ten assists, he’s starting to do stuff. People can say whatever they want about how many chances he misses.

“But [Ibrahima] Konate and Virgil [Van Dijk] at the back, solid. I think [Conor] Bradley will come in and it looks like he’s going to be solid for the time-being for what he’s doing. He looks really comfortable.

“But in the main, Liverpool, especially the way [Alexis] Mac Allister played the other day, I just feel like I fancy Liverpool. I really do.”

With 48 points after 21 games of 2023/24, the Reds are three better off then they were back in 2021/22 – the last time they mounted a title challenge.

In that season, Klopp's side were already eight points behind City – though they would still make up the difference to run the title race to the final day of the season.

The Reds don't play again in the Premier League until 31 January when they take on Chelsea at Anfield. That game is followed by a tough trip away to title rivals Arsenal on 4 February.
