Ian Wright hails "really good" Darwin Nunez after Brentford win

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright heaped praise on Darwin Nunez after Liverpool's 3-0 win over Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool moved up to second in the Premier League table after beating the Bees, a brace from Mohamed Salah and a Diogo Jota strike separating the two sides.

While Nunez didn't score on Sunday, the Uruguayan did have the ball in the back of the net on two occasions.

The first of Nunez's disallowed strikes was an incredibly marginal offside, the forward's toe adjudged to be beyond the last Brentford defender. While his second was a much clearer offside, the former Benfica man took his bicycle kick wonderfully.

Despite the fact that he didn't get his name on the scoresheet, Nunez did grab an assist for Salah's opener. The 24-year-old took Trent Alexander-Arnold's fizzed pass in his stride before releasing the Egyptian down the right side.

It was another impressive performance from Nunez following a strong start to the new campaign, something that wasn't lost on Wright.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2, the former England striker said: "The way he runs the channels, I think his link-up play is getting better every week.

"We’re still seeing some of the chances [missed] but in the main he looks like somebody whose confidence is not eroded at all.

"Even when he misses, next week he tries again. You see his link up play with Salah, he’s looking really good."

Nunez now has seven goal and six assists in 17 appearances for the Reds this season, a significantly more impressive total than at this stage last season. He also tested Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken regularly in the first half on Sunday, highlighting his immense work rate throughout the match as well.

On the blossoming partnership between Nunez and Salah, fellow pundit Alan Shearer added: "They've got a really good understanding of when to pass it, how to pass it.

"There's a link-up play, there's an understanding between the both of them. 'Look out for me, I'll look out for you'."

Nunez laid on his fourth Premier League assist of the season against Brentford, all of which have come for Salah. The pair are developing a near telepathic relationship with one another.

Nunez continues to impress as the weeks pass and, if he can work on the consistency of his finishing, then he will develop into a truly formidable No. 9.
