Ian Rush has spoken on chances of Mohamed Salah breaking Liverpool goal record

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has said that Mohamed Salah needs 'a few more years' to get close to his record goals tally for Liverpool.

Rush is hailed as one of the greatest players in Liverpool's decorated history, becoming the Reds' all-time leading scoring during his two stints at Anfield (1980-87 and 1988-1996).

The Welshman sits comfortably at the top of the top goalscorers chart with 336 in all competitions – 61 strikes ahead of second-placed Roger Hunt. However, the fifth-placed player on the list (a certain Egyptian winger) continues to climb the rankings.

With an impressive tally of 186 goals across all competitions since joining the club in 2017, Salah sits behind only Billy Liddell (228), Gordon Hodgson (241), Hunt (285) and Rush, and has time on his side.

Speaking to prothomalo.com, a Bangladeshi news outlet, Rush confessed that he has spoken to Salah about the Liverpool goals record.

Rush said: "I speak a lot to Mo Salah. Mo keeps saying why did you score so many goals. He is thinking he might break my record. He would have to be there a good few more years if he is going to break that record."

Rush also lavished praise on Salah's fitness and opined that the 31-year-old is more of a team player now, which could prove to be detrimental to his hopes of topping Liverpool's goalscoring charts.

"You never know. And again I think I was lucky, I didn’t have many injuries," the Rush said. "When you look at Mo now, he is not getting many injuries as well. After he had that accident with the shoulder, you can see his fitness and he has built up all his body. He plays virtually every game.

"He plays bit more of a wider role now. I don’t think he has scored as many goals but I think he made just as many assists this year. He has become more of a team player. A couple of years ago, he was maybe being a little selfish. But in the last two years, he has become more of a team player. And I think he is making just as many assists as he is scoring goals."

Reports have claimed that Salah – whose Liverpool contract expires in 2025 – is a future target for the big-spending Saudi Pro League. However, the star's agent, Ramy Abbas, has poured cold water over claims that the Egyptian could move this summer.

Salah will look to close in on Rush's record in the Reds' Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday, 13 August.
