"I would probably keep him" - Jamie Carragher on Liverpool forward
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has given his opinion on Roberto Firmino's future.
The forward's contract expires at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign. With that being the case, there has been plenty of talk regarding Firmino's future in recent times.
He has even been linked with a move to Juventus.
However, Carragher believes Liverpool should keep Firmino despite the fact that he could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.
As quoted by AW's Twitter account, he told Sky Sports: "I don’t think it’s a risk losing him for nothing. I have felt for a couple of years now that Firmino would see this contract out and move on for nothing.
"I think getting £19 million or keeping Firmino next season, I would probably keep him. The situation Liverpool find themselves in, they don’t want to be caught short.
"I think Firmino will have a big role. Listen, (Darwin) Nunez might take time to settle and he is playing in the Premier League. And that’s not just about his ability, it’s about coming to a different league.
"So, I think Firmino could be really important this season and I think he might actually start the first few games of the season and I can imagine Nunez coming off the bench.
"I am not quite sure about the Juventus links. Obviously, we have spent a lot of money on a striker and Juventus play a 4-3-3 so I couldn’t see Firmino playing wide or going there to be an understudy. The links may be true, I don’t know, but I would keep him.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We completely agree with Carragher. Firmino has been a class player for Liverpool.
The forward has scored 98 goals and registered 74 assists in 328 appearances for the club's first-team.
Firmino gives Liverpool strength and depth. Also, the Brazilian is only 30 years of age. His career is far from finished.
Selling Firmino would make no sense, especially with the 2022-23 Premier League campaign kicking off this coming weekend.
It will be interesting to see which forward players take to the field against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has plenty of options at his disposal (Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Firmino).
