“I would be disappointed" - Paul Merson on Mohamed Salah's contract situation

Pundit Paul Merson has weighed in on the situation regarding Mohamed Salah's new contract.

It has been reported that the winger does not intend on signing the contract offer on the table from Liverpool.

Salah's current deal expires in the summer of 2023.

Merson believes that the Anfield faithful should be disappointed that the Reds have not been able to tie the 29-year-old down to a new contract.

The former Arsenal forward further added that if Salah did depart Liverpool, the midfielders would have to score more goals to help fill the void.

“If Salah went, then they would have to look into the midfield for a lot more goals,” Merson told Sky Sports (12/03/22 at 12:10 pm).

“That’s where you are asking (Jordan) Henderson, Fabinho, I know Harvey Elliott is a good player, and that might come. But Thiago (Alcantara), they aren’t goalscorers and that’s the problem.

“If I am Liverpool fan, then I would be disappointed if they didn’t give Salah what he wanted. It has taken them 30 years to get to (being Premier League champions).

“You have to remember, they were dominant in football. It has taken them all this time to get back up there and now they are a major force. You can’t let one of the best players in the world (leave).”

It is difficult for us to comment on Salah's contract situation. We don't know what the Egyptian international is actually demanding.

However, all we will say is that the club should be doing everything to tie Salah down to a new long-term deal.

The forward has scored 153 goals and registered 57 assists in 238 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Salah has shown no signs of slowing down. The 29-year-old has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.57 across the 2021-22 club campaign.

The aforementioned figures highlight that Salah is a world-class footballer. If the winger and Liverpool don't come to an agreement, we will be devastated.
