Liverpool youngster Jake Cain has admitted that he was "disappointed" to miss out on the club's pre-season.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp selected 12 academy players to be involved in the pre-season programme.

However, Cain never got a look in. The central midfielder has opened up on being ignored by Klopp.

“I can’t lie, I was disappointed,” Cain told Goal.

“I thought I had a good loan (Newport County), I did what was asked of me, and I thought I could come back and show the first team what I can do.

“They’re the best team in Europe, so I know it’s going to be very difficult to push for a place in the team, but I thought I might have been able to go on the tour, show what I can do and see what the first-team coaches said.

“So, yeah, it was disappointing.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Cain is obviously a promising young player, which is why he is representing Liverpool Football Club.

We are delighted that the 20-year-old is disappointed that he missed out on the club's pre-season programme.

But, as Cain pointed out, the Reds are a world-class team. Liverpool possess plenty of options in midfield (Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott).

Therefore, opportunities are not easy to come by at Anfield.

All Cain can do is continue improving and his chance may come. Hopefully the youngster plays well this season.

Cain has arguably put a bit of pressure on himself by making the aforementioned comments. But, perhaps he plays better with that added expectation.
