"I want to reveal to you" - Fabrizio Romano confirms Real Madrid were interested in Red
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Real Madrid were interested in signing Darwin Nunez before he joined Liverpool.
The Reds signed the forward from Benfica for a transfer fee of £67.50 million earlier this summer.
However, things could have panned out very differently, according to Romano.
The reporter has claimed that Real Madrid were keeping an eye on Nunez, but a stumbling block stopped the La Liga side from making a move for the Uruguay international.
Romano told his YouTube channel the following: “It was not easy guys (for Liverpool to sign Nunez). Why? Because I want to reveal to you that Real Madrid were really interested after missing out on the Kylian Mbappe deal.
“One of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid was Darwin Nunez, but it was not possible from a passport point of view, because Darwin has no European passport and with Real Madrid it would not be possible to register Darwin Nunez if they found an agreement with Benfica, so it was impossible to complete that negotiation.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We are delighted that Nunez is a Liverpool player. The forward is a serious talent.
Nunez scored 47 goals and registered 16 assists in 84 appearances for Benfica's first-team.
He is only 23 years of age. Therefore, he is far from the finished article. Nunez could represent Liverpool's first-team for a number of years.
We strongly believe that the Uruguay international will enjoy playing for Liverpool. The Anfield faithful love a centre-forward.
The Reds competed for the quadruple last season. With that being the case, Nunez has a great opportunity to win some silverware with Liverpool.
We wish him all the best ahead of his debut season at Anfield.
