"I think they will be discussing a new contract" - Pundit on Liverpool forward

Pundit Frank McAvennie believes that Liverpool will offer Roberto Firmino a new deal.

The forward is out of contract at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.

McAvennie is under the impression that Jurgen Klopp's trust in Firmino will see him offered a new deal in the near future.

“Klopp trusts him and that’s why I think they will be discussing a new contract. Klopp won’t want him to go, he’ll want him to stay,” he told Football Insider, as quoted by Caught Offside.

“But he has to produce the goods every week, that’s what happens when you’re in a big team like Liverpool and he’ll know that. And if his standards drop, he will be out.

“For me, I wouldn’t read into him starting in the Community Shield, we’ll know more once the league starts.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We have no idea if the club will offer Firmino a new contract. However, we are certainly not against the idea.

Firmino is only 30 years of age. Yes, the forward is at the backend of his career, but he is certainly not at the end of it.

As McAvennie pointed out, Firmino started against Manchester City in the Community Shield final last weekend, which highlights that he is still an important member of the squad.

The Brazil international was solid for Liverpool last season. Firmino scored 11 goals and registered five assists in 35 appearances.

The club would be wise to offer him a new deal. Only time will tell if that is to be the case. We wish Firmino all the best ahead of the new campaign.
