“I think he’s underrated" - Micah Richards on Liverpool man
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has recently praised Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip.
The Reds signed the 31-year-old from Schalke on a free transfer back in the summer of 2016. Matip has struggled with injuries since arriving at Anfield.
But, when the defender has been available for selection, he has proven his worth. Matip managed to stay healthy for the majority of the 2021-22 campaign.
He averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.36 across 31 Premier League fixtures. Richards believes that Matip is underrated as a centre-back.
He told LADBibleTV the following (13:35): “I think Matip has been good as (Virgil van Dijk) well, you know?
“I think he’s underrated. I think he started ok, had the injuries, but as you watch him – last season, he was arguably better than Van Dijk, in my opinion.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We completely agree with Richards that Matip is underrated. He doesn't get the credit that he deserves.
Liverpool only conceded 26 goals in 38 Premier League fixtures last season, which reflects well on Matip.
The 31-year-old has helped the Reds win the Champions League, Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Premier League title, League Cup FA Cup and Community Shield.
Matip will be remembered as a legend of the club. He is a key reason why Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world.
Matip is contracted until the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign. So, providing he stays fit, he will be playing alongside Van Dijk for at least a couple more years.
We wish Matip all the very best for the remainder of the season.
