"I must admit" - Michael Owen's verdict on the Premier League title race

Pundit Michael Owen has given his verdict on the 2021-22 Premier League title race.

League leaders Manchester City defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-1 at the Molineux Stadium last night.

With that being the case, the Citizens possess a three-point lead over second-placed Liverpool. Both sides only have two top-flight games remaining this season.

Therefore, Owen believes that Pep Guardiola's side will clinch the title.

“I felt it was a double knockout tonight (for Liverpool having seen Manchester City defeat Wolves),” he told Premier League Productions (11/05/22 at 10:40pm BST).

“Not just winning the game, but the goal difference is now becoming an issue (+72 to +65 in Manchester City's favour).

“I fancy Liverpool to win both of their games, I must admit – listen, Manchester City could drop points against West Ham United. But I can’t see them dropping points to both (West Ham United and Aston Villa).

“Jurgen Klopp has to go into that game against Southampton thinking ‘okay, we need to win this game by four or five’, then hope Man City lose one game. It wasn’t a good night for Liverpool.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We do agree with Owen. We can only see Manchester City winning the title now.

Liverpool have been very good in the league this season, but they have drawn far too many games. The Reds have dropped points in 10 fixtures (eight draws and two losses).

Unfortunately, when you are up against a machine like Pep Guardiola's side, you have very little room for error.

On the bright side, Liverpool have already won the League Cup this season and could also win two more trophies. The Reds are in contention for the FA Cup and Champions League.

We are looking forward to the final phase of the campaign.
