"I made a wrong decision" - Mario Gotze on not joining Liverpool in 2016

Mario Gotze has spoken about reports that said he was close to signing for Liverpool in 2016 and if he regrets not joining the Reds.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Gotze has claimed that he 'made the wrong decision' not joining Liverpool in 2016.

“Do I regret it? [not joining Liverpool]. It’s always difficult to look back but if you ask me now then yeah, I should have joined Liverpool for sure," said Gotze. "I just made a wrong decision but it’s not a regret."

Gotze also spoke about his former manager, Jurgen Klopp, who tried to convince him to sign for the Reds when he became manager.

"We are still in touch and we spoke back then about me coming to Liverpool," said Gotze. But I wasn’t in a state of mind where I could consider it, that’s why it didn’t happen.

“Klopp probably made the biggest impact on my career. He can be very demanding – he can be your friend but also very harsh at the same time. It pushes you to great performances. That’s what happened with me back then, and it’s happened with Liverpool now.

“He is a manager not just for the players but everyone at the club, and then one-on-one he can be a friend as well as a boss. Can I imagine working with him again? I can imagine that, yes – we’ll see.

“He’s a good coach, for sure. He and Pep Guardiola are the most important coaches and characters I had in my career.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Even though Gotze was unbelievable under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, his career never really took off after he left BVB.

Injuries had a massive part to play in the reason why he didn't succeed as much as the German media and fans thought he would.

However, if we did sign Gotze in 2016 then Sadio Mane probably wouldn't have joined Liverpool. So it all worked out well in the end!
