Former Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has named the Liverpool player that he looked up to.

The 33-year-old said that he idolised Michael Owen when he was growing up. Aguero further added that he saw a lot of himself in the Englishman.

"Look, to me the Premier League is... when I was a kid I was looking up to Michael Owen," Aguero told Thierry Henry for Puma back in 2020: "I've always said it, even in my book, I like him because he's small, he had the No.10 just like me in my club and he played as a forward.

"So I told myself, if a small player like him is doing well in the Premier League, I could make it too.

"Imagine that I was only a kid, I was 9-10-years-old, it was in 1998, he scored this amazing goal with England, I was a kid and when I saw that goal I couldn't believe my eyes.

"I was watching the World Cup in my neighbourhood and I was telling everyone that I loved Owen."

Anfield Watch Verdict

Owen was a superb player for Liverpool. The forward scored 158 goals and registered 49 assists in 297 appearances for the club's first-team.

Owen also won five major trophies with the Reds. However, there is no denying that Owen ruined his Liverpool legacy when he signed for Manchester United from Newcastle United back in the summer of 2009.

Liverpool and Manchester United are huge rivals. If you have represented the Reds, you do not sign for the Red Devils.

Therefore, you won't find too many Liverpool supporters who have anything positive to say about Owen.

But, we will never forget how good the striker was when he was wearing the famous Red. Owen retired from professional football back in 2013.
