Jay Spearing has spoken about rejoining Liverpool as an U21 player and U18 coach.

The Reds have signed Spearing as a free agent this summer to play for Barry Lewtas’ U21s team and also coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's U18s side.

The 33-year-old left Liverpool nine years ago. Spearing has recently spoken about his return to the club.

“I feel like a kid at Christmas. It’s surreal to be back but an amazing feeling. This is the place I called home from the age of seven before I moved up to Melwood and then left at the age of 23," he told The Atheltic.

“I’m a Liverpool fan so to have the liver bird on my chest again is extra special and it’s such an exciting time to be here with the success the club is enjoying. It was always my dream to play for the first-team.

“I managed to achieve that before going on to have a great career. I loved every minute of it. Now it’s time for the next chapter of my life and trying to help these boys achieve their own dreams.”

I mean fans were calling out for a midfielder this summer...

In all seriousness though, it's a good appointment. Spearing knows what it takes to play for the first-team and he also knows what to do once you're at the top.

Yes, his Liverpool career didn't plan out as he would've hoped (55 first-team appearances), but with him experiencing all the highs and lows, the next generation can learn plenty from him.

Who knows, if the Reds get a few injuries in midfield next season, we could see Spearing play under Jurgen Klopp. Funnier things have happened in football.
