"I feel completely utterly deflated" - Steve Nicol on the result against Palace
Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol is disappointed with how the Reds played against Crystal Palace at Anfield last night.
Liverpool could only secure a 1-1 draw against the Eagles. New-boy Darwin Nunez was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen.
Nicol said the following about Liverpool's display.
"He’s (Nunez) got a lot of growing to do. The guy's got quality. Yes he’s a handful but you know what comes is a lot of teething problems and one of them being what goes on in your head, your composure," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.
"Whether it’s composure when you’re in front of goal or whether it’s composure on the field of play when someones trying to rub you up the wrong way - you take the bait. Darwin Nunez is going to be fine.
"I feel completely utterly deflated. This is a game Liverpool had to win, they probably should’ve won it but as much as they dominated, they didn’t look as though they were going to score. They had some chances, they weren’t chances you were going ‘how’s he missed that?’
"Nunez had a couple of chances that had he had more composure on his finish, he would’ve scored, he did have one where he pulled it down but you’ve got to give credit to the defender.
"So I’m talking Nunez having no composure with his finish and he certainly got sent off with lack of composure because he’s head butted his opponent."
Anfield Watch Verdict
We completely agree with Nicol's take. We felt deflated come the end of the match.
It was Liverpool's first home game of the 2022-23 Premier League season, so we expected the Reds to be at it.
Liverpool played with decent intent, but their end product was ordinary.
Because of how good Manchester City are, it will take something special for the Reds to win the Premier League title this season.
The Citizens have won four of the past five league titles. The Reds are yet to win a game after two fixtures.
Hopefully we see an improved display from Liverpool against Manchester United at Old Trafford next Monday night.
