"I expect" - BBC writer's prediction regarding Liverpool this season
BBC's chief football writer Phil McNulty has given his opinion on how Liverpool will go this season.
The Reds were very good last campaign. However, they still fell short in the Premier League and Champions League.
Manchester City beat Liverpool to the title by one-point. In terms of the Champions League, Real Madrid defeated the Reds 1-0 in the final.
Despite that being the case, McNulty is backing Liverpool to go again.
“Manchester City have been Premier League champions four of the past five seasons and I expect another straight fight with Liverpool to end with them on top again," he told BBC Sport.
McNulty added: “A truly outstanding season last time out ended with them missing out on the title on the final day, losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid but winning the FA Cup and League Cup, both on penalties against Chelsea.
“Expect them to fight on all fronts again this term and challenge City all the way, securing at least one trophy.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We fully expect Liverpool to be around the mark again for the major honours in club football.
Yes, winger Sadio Mane has departed Anfield and joined Bayern Munich this summer.
However, Liverpool have added Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay to their ranks ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is blessed with a talented squad. Of course, if Liverpool suffer some injuries to key players, then it will be difficult to win any silverware.
But, as things stand, the Reds are right in the mix to win a trophy or two this season. We can't wait for the new campaign to kick-off this Saturday.
