Pundit Michael Owen has raved about Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds signed the Dutchman from Southampton for a transfer fee of €84.65 million back in January 2018.

Since then, Van Dijk has gone on to make 164 appearances for Liverpool's first-team. The defender claimed the 2019 PFA Player of the Year award, which provides an insight into how well he has performed at certain times for the Reds.

Liverpool have also won five major trophies since Van Dijk's arrival.

With that being the case, Michael Owen said that Van Dijk could be the best centre-back that he has ever seen.

As quoted by Anfield Watch, the Liverpool Echo has claimed that the former Red said the following last weekend: “I have never ever seen, in my lifetime, I don’t think I have seen a better defender. I have played against some great defenders. I don’t see what he can’t do. “He plays in second gear and it’s too easy for him. The game is easy for him. “He is lightning fast. Brilliant on the ball. Scores goals (16 goals for the Reds). A beast in the air. He reads the game. A leader. I don’t know what he doesn’t do. I don’t think I have seen a better defender. He could be one of the greatest of all time.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We do agree with Owen. Van Dijk is certainly one of the best centre-backs to have ever played the game. There is nothing that he can't do.

Van Dijk is having a very good season. He has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.27 across all competitions.

Van Dijk should lead Liverpool's defence for many more years to come. The Dutchman is only 30 years of age after all.

Also, Van Dijk's contract does not expire until the summer of 2025. Therefore, we look forward to watching the centre-back strut his stuff whilst wearing the famous red in the near future.
