"I don't know if we can" - Jurgen Klopp discusses squad rotation difficulties

Jurgen Klopp doesn't know how much he will be able to rotate his Liverpool team in the coming weeks as the hectic winter fixture list looms over the Reds.

The Liverpool boss has generally used the Europa League and Carabao Cup to rotate his side this season, but with only one European fixture left and the Reds now in the quarter-final of the cup, opportunities for fringe players may be harder to come by.

Liverpool's fixture list looks pretty brutal over the next two months, with Klopp's men guaranteed to play 12 matches by the end of January 2024, although there could be more depending on their progression in the domestic cup competitions.

With Alisson and Diogo Jota having recently joined an injury list that already contains Andy Robertson, Thiago and Stefan Bajcetic, Klopp will be keeping his fingers crossed that the rest of his side can stay fit during the festive period.

Speaking before the Fulham game this weekend, Klopp said: "I am not sure we can rotate all the time. I don’t know, we will see that – it depends who is available.

"[On Thursday] we could do it and that’s why we did it. When you lose in Toulouse, for example, and then people tell you, ‘Too many changes’, these kind of things, ‘No rhythm’, I think it myself. When I saw the game I thought, ‘Was that the right decision?’ Just the problem is it is already done.

"But we have to do it as long as we can. But I don’t know if we can do it. You saw Newcastle playing in the Champions League, two goalies and three kids on the bench I think and a centre-half, [Paul] Dummett. That’s really tough. You have to make sure you have as many available, as much as you can have influence on, which we don’t have really.

"We watch it, take what we get and go from there. How I said, the toughest period in world football is coming up. It’s a good start [against LASK] and now let’s keep going."

Klopp will have the opportunity to leave out as many players as he wishes against Union Saint-Gilloise in Liverpool's final Europa League group game as the Reds guaranteed top spot with the 4-0 win over LASK on Thursday.

However, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United to come over the next month, there may not be too many chances for the German to rest players.
