"I don't agree" - Danny Murphy defends FSG regarding transfers
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has defended the club's owners - Fenway Sports Group.
Plenty of Anfield supporters have been critical of FSG's transfer business in recent times. Those fans believe that the owners have not backed Reds boss Jurgen Klopp in recent transfer windows.
However, Murphy does not agree with the aforementioned take.
“I don’t agree that FSG have let him down with transfers,” he told talkSPORT.
“In the summer I don’t remember any discussion about what they’re lacking in defence and midfield. They brought in Ibrahima Konate for £50 million to help with (Virgil) van Dijk and Joel Matip, they’ve got full-backs to cover, they’ve spent £85 million on a striker in Darwin Nunez to fill the void left by (Sadio) Mane’s goal and assists – where haven’t they backed him?
“In the summer I didn’t see many people who weren’t expecting Liverpool to be up there with Man City again. Only three months ago we were talking about Liverpool having, or nearly having, one of the best seasons in history.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Murphy does make a fair point. For the most part, FSG have backed Klopp.
But, we strongly believe that the club should have signed a top midfielder this summer.
The Reds possess an ageing midfield. Both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are in their 30s.
So, it would have made sense for FSG and Klopp to bring in a top-class midfielder. As far as we are concerned, the middle of the park has to be the priority for the club next summer.
Only time will tell if that is to be the case. For the time being, we are going to sit back and enjoy watching Liverpool play.
