"I didn't want to be another Gary Neville" - Former Red Robbie Keane opens up
Former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane has revealed that he used to play as a right-back during his junior football days.
The 41-year-old went on to have a pretty good career as a centre-forward. Keane scored 125 goals in 349 Premier League appearances.
But, the Irishman may never had become a decent striker if it was not for his uncle.
"I started off as a right-back," he told Sky Sports.
"Four years at right-back for my local team and then my uncle took over the team. He moved me up front, so I'm glad that he did that."
Keane jokingly added: "I didn't want to be another Gary Neville (right-back)."
Anfield Watch Verdict
Liverpool signed Keane from Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of £21.60 million back in the summer of 2008.
However, the Irishman could not get going at Anfield. Keane only found the back of the net seven times in 28 appearances for the Reds.
The 41-year-old was sold back to Spurs six months later. It was a shame that we did not see the best of Keane during his time at Anfield.
As we have already pointed out, he was a decent striker. But, sometimes certain transfers simply do not work out. That was very much the case with Keane's move to Liverpool.
The forward eventually retired from professional football back in 2018. Despite the fact that Keane was a good player, Liverpool now possess strikers that operate at a world-class level.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino make up the club's options up front.
Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's recruitment has been unbelievable. Out of the aforementioned attackers, Firmino is the only one which the German did not sign.
Hopefully the club can continue recruiting top players in the years to come.
