"Huge part of the reason" - Pundit on why Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez

Former England international Paul Robinson has said that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp might've made the decision to sign Darwin Nunez after a certain fixture.

When the Reds faced Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, Nunez was by far the standout player.

In fact, Klopp even claimed that he was "massively impressed" with the Uruguayan's performance against his side.

Now, Nunez is a Liverpool player and one pundit thinks that the German decided to make a move for him because of the quater-final tie.

“I don’t think you can take Klopp’s comments without a pinch of salt," Robinson told Football Insider.

“The club will have done their due diligence on players. There is so much homework and background checks.

“In two games, Klopp will have been able to see there is a player there. I think it would have been a case of Klopp seeing the two games and getting his staff to look into the possibility of a deal.

“I’m sure those two games were a huge part of the reason but it will not be the only reason they signed him, that’s for sure.

“It is clever to listen to your players if you’re a manager. They are very knowledgable. If a player comes off the pitch and say, ‘Gaffer, have a look at him. He is top class you would be silly not.'”

Liverpool have a habit of signing players that they have come up against in recent years.

Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Takumi Minamino and now Nunez.

I feel like if you impress the Liverpool team, Klopp and his coaching staff, then you definitely have a chance of being signed by the Reds.

To be fair to Klopp too, none of these players have failed at Anfield, so hopefully that's good news for Nunez's future!
