How many games will Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota be suspended for?
Liverpool will be without Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota in upcoming fixtures after the pair were both sent off in the clash with Tottenham on Saturday evening.
Jones' 24th-minute foul on Yves Bissouma initially only deemed worthy of yellow card by referee Simon Hooper, but became a red after a VAR review.
The 22-year-old midfielder was incredulous at the decision and while, he clearly did catch Bissouma over the top of the ball, he appeared to slip into the misjudged challenge, which looked worse on the replay.
Jones' dismissal split opinion, with Sky Sports' Gary Neville skeptical of the official's decision.
He said: "He is over the top, the ball is moving and it is certainly not a red, it looks worse than it actually is.
"His foot slips, it is not a red for me and this will ruin the game."
"I maybe wrong, but I just do not know any more. In slow motion, you will come to the conclusion it is a red card. I do not think he has gone over the top to do him."
Liverpool's one-man disadvantage became two in the second half, as Diogo Jota – who had been brought on at half time – received two yellows for separate fouls in the space of two minutes, leaving the Reds with just nine men for the final 20 minutes as they attempted to cling onto a hard-fought point.
They almost managed it, defending impressively, until a Joel Matip own goal deep into stoppage time won the game for the hosts.
What games will Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota miss?
Jota's suspension is a fairly simple explanation.
As per the FA's laws, players who commit a second bookable offence will be handed a one-match ban.
The Portuguese forward will now sit out Liverpool's tricky trip to Brighton on Sunday, 8 October.
Jones, however, likely faces a three-match ban, owing to the fact that his red card came as the result of serious foul play for a challenge judged to be dangerous.
However, while Jota's suspension cannot be challenged – red cards as a result of two yellows cannot be contested – Jones' somewhat contentious straight dismissal could still be overturned, if an appeal is lodged with the FA and a panel decides that referee made the incorrect decision.
In the event of a successful appeal, the suspension will be cancelled – as happened already this season with Alexis Mac Allister's red card against Bournemouth.
However, it is worth noting that if the FA rule that a club has lodged a 'frivolous' appeal, a three-game ban can be further increased.
As it stands, Jones will most likely be unavailable for Liverpool Premier League game against Brighton, as well as the home Merseyside Derby against Everton (21 October) and home tie against Nottingham Forest (29 October).
