How every Liverpool loanee has fared during first half of 2023/24 season

Liverpool have been praised for their commitment to young players this season.

As well as the likes of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones becoming even more integral figures in the Reds' squad, Jarell Quansah has emerged as a regular centre-back for Jurgen Klopp this season.

There have also been opportunities for the likes of Conor Bradley, Ben Doak and Luke Chambers, with many of the club's young talents having impressed when called upon.

However, some of Liverpool's players haven't been so fortunate.

Many of the Reds' peripheral figures and academy prodigies have had to seek temporary loan moves away from Merseyside to earn more regular minutes.

Those that have departed Anfield have enjoyed mixed fortunes, with Liverpool having already recalled a number of loanees in January due to a lack of game time.

Let's take a look at how all of Liverpool's loanees fared during the first half of the 2023/24 season.

FABIO CARVALHO

The Portuguese was shipped out on loan to RB Leipzig having fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool, with high expectations for the attacking midfielder in Germany.

However, things didn't go to plan for the 21-year-old, Carvalho registering just three starts in 15 appearances for Marco Rose's side, while also failing to provide a single goal contribution at the Red Bull Arena.

Carvalho's loan was so disastrous that Liverpool recalled him early during the January transfer window and he has now teamed up with Championship Hull City for the second half of the campaign.

TYLER MORTON

There will be a familiar face for Carvalho in Hull, with Tyler Morton having spent the first half of the season on loan with Liam Rosenior's side.

The midfielder has been mightily impressive during his time with the Tigers, even winning the Championship's Young Player of the Month award for November.

Morton has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, even registering two goals and three assists from defensive midfield.

His performances have been so good that he was even called up to the England U21s last November, scoring in a 3-0 win over Northern Ireland.

RHYS WILLIAMS

Having spent part of last season on loan with Blackpool, the centre-back made the temporary switch to Aberdeen this campaign.

However, much like Carvalho, things didn't go well. In fact, Williams didn't even register a single senior appearance for the Dons, Liverpool recalling him in January.

It's expected that the 22-year-old will be loaned out again this transfer window.

NAT PHILLIPS

Having become something of a fan favourite at Liverpool for his throwback style, Phillips was loaned out to Celtic at the start of the season.

The centre-back agreed a six-month loan with the Bhoys and has now returned to Anfield following a disappointing spell in Scotland.

The 26-year-old found minutes hard to come by north of the border, featuring just eight times for Celtic in all competitions.

SEPP VAN DEN BERG

The Dutchman hasn't had much luck with injuries in recent seasons, often seeing loan spells derailed by fitness concerns.

However, the centre-back has managed to stay fit this season, impressing for a struggling Mainz side in the Bundesliga.

The 22-year-old may have only taken part in two victories in Germany, but he has been a shining light for Jan Siewert's side.

It's reported that Van den Berg's current deal with Mainz includes an option to buy, a clause the German side may activate next summer.

OWEN BECK

The young Welsh left-back had dazzled in Scotland during his time with Dundee, so much so that Liverpool decided to recall him early amid their left-back injury crisis.

While he is yet to feature for the Reds, and could be loaned out again before the end of January, he is clearly a player that Jurgen Klopp admires.

The defender provided two goals and two assists in 17 Scottish Premiership appearances.

JAMES BALAGIZI

Another loanee that has been recalled early by Liverpool, Balagizi struggled for minutes during his time at Wigan Athletic.

The midfielder made just seven appearances in all competitions, his most recent outing for the League One side coming in mid-November.

While Balagizi's loan at Wigan didn't work out, the Reds have just sent Luke Chambers to the DW Stadium for the second half of the campaign.

CALVIN RAMSAY

The Scotsman had rotten luck with injuries during his first season at Anfield and he has been similarly unlucky this season.

The right-back is currently on loan at Preston North End, but has only managed two appearances for the Championship side.

Ramsay's loan has been disappointing, with reports suggesting he may be recalled this January by Liverpool.

BILLY KOUMETIO

Sent on loan to Dunkerque in Ligue 2, Koumetio had started to see some regular minutes for the French outfit, making nine appearances in all competitions after a slow start.

However, there have been reports that the 21-year-old is now no longer taking part in training sessions with the club and may return early to Liverpool.

HARVEY DAVIES

The goalkeeper has graced the Liverpool bench a few times in the past, but was sent on loan to Crewe Alexandra last summer in order to secure regular first-team football.

He had been the League Two side's first-choice stopper this season, making 26 appearances in all competitions.

However, he has only been named as a substitute in recent games, with Crewe having kept three clean sheets in five games in his absence.

ADAM LEWIS

The 24-year-old is currently on loan with Newport County in League Two, having featured at both left-back and centre-back this term.

Lewis has made 13 appearances for the lower league outfit, but hasn't featured regularly for Newport since late September.

DOMINIC CORNESS

The 20-year-old made the rather unconventional loan move to Yverdon Sport in Switzerland last summer.

Playing in the top division, the English midfielder has made 12 appearances in the league, although the majority have come from the bench.

JAMES NORRIS

Norris has struggled to make too much of an impact at Tranmere Rovers during the first half of the campaign, with just ten appearances to his name.

The 20-year-old has been used all over the pitch this season, but hasn't been able to nail down a regular spot.

LUCA STEPHENSON

Currently on loan at Barrow in League Two, the midfielder has made 19 appearances this season already.

Stephenson has registered one assist for Barrow and has found himself in and out of the starting lineup.

 JAKUB OJRZYNSKI

The young Polish goalkeeper has spent the season in the Dutch second division with FC Den Bosch, making a string of appearances for the side between late September and late November.

However, the 20-year-old has only accumulated ten appearances in total.

ANDERSON ARROYO

The 24-year-old has started just five games for FC Andorra in Spain's second tier, failing to muscle into the starting lineup on a more regular basis.
