Here's how Erik Ten Hag reacted to Jurgen Klopp stepping down as Liverpool boss. The German will leave at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp shocked football on Friday as he announced that he's stepping down as Liverpool boss at the end of the season. It will bring to an end a near 9-year spell as manager - the longest spell in the Premier League right now.

It's a decision that not only leaves a void at Liverpool but also in the Premier League. The Reds have been one of the two dominant teams in the country for years now - the door is now open for that to change.

Liverpool will hope to make the right decision and find a manager who can keep to Klopp's standards but in reality, that's an incredibly difficult thing to do. Teams that have struggled to compete with the Reds will now feel there's a chance to overtake them.

One such team is Manchester United. Manager Erik Ten Hag will hope to move up the league in Klopp's absence and he was asked for his reaction to the news on Friday.

“It’s not good for the Premier League," he told a press conference. "He has made an era there. He built the club.

"He brought the club back where they belong, so congratulations on that. He has done an amazing job at Liverpool.”

Of course, the idea that Klopp 'built the club' is wrong - Liverpool have long been one of the most successful clubs on the planet - but it's quite a response from Ten Hag. He clearly rates what Klopp has achieved incredibly highly and isn't afraid to show that.

Whether United fans want him praising the Liverpool boss quite that highly is another thing altogether, but it's certainly a very nice comment from the Dutchman.

We'll just hope that he views the next manager just as well.
