How Alexis Mac Allister's penalty record compares to his Liverpool teammates

Alexis Mac Allister has been a sensation since swapping Brighton for Liverpool last summer and the Argentine has added a few more goals to his tally in the past few games.

The World Cup winner has been entrusted with penalty kick duties in the absence of Liverpool's regular taker Mohamed Salah and he has had the opportunity to showcase his quality from 12 yards in the last two games.

It took Mac Allister just seven minutes to win and convert a penalty during the Reds' 5-1 demolition of Sparta Prague last Thursday, and the midfielder followed it up with an incredibly calm penalty under pressure to earn Liverpool a point against Manchester City on Sunday.

Salah has faced some criticism over the past season and a half for his penalty record, with the Egyptian having already missed two this term in the Premier League - although he was able to convert the rebound on one occasion.

With Liverpool's No.11 back in action after weeks of injury woes, it will be interesting to see whether the winger reclaims his place as penalty king.

Here is how Liverpool's penalty takers compare to one another.

MOHAMED SALAH

Salah has quite comfortably scored the most penalties of any Liverpool player throughout the course of his career, netting 39 in total for club and country.

In Liverpool red, the Egyptian has scored 31 spot kicks and missed seven, meaning he has a conversion rate of 81.6%. Roughly speaking, he will score four of every five penalties he takes.

However, Salah has been particularly wasteful from the spot since the beginning of last season, missing four of the 13 he has taken for Jurgen Klopp's side. He has also missed one of four for Egypt in that time.

The issue with Salah's penalty taking may simply be his technique. The former Roma man often favours power over precision and has never been entirely convincing from the spot since taking on the responsibility at Anfield.

Despite having frequently scored from 12 yards for the Reds, Salah doesn't exude the same confidence as the likes of James Milner or Steven Gerrard from the spot.

Mac Allister has taken far fewer penalties over the course of his career than Salah, but he has been ruthless from the spot to date.

He may have only taken 13 penalties, but he has netted 12 of them, including the two he has scored for Liverpool over the course of the past week.

Those are the only spot kicks he has taken for the Reds, while his only miss came during a 3-0 win over Wolves during his Brighton days.

Given the precision and calm in which he dispatched his most recent penalties, there may be some clamour for the South American to be Liverpool's designated taker from now on.

Darwin Nunez may not be the kind of player you would associate with being a cool head from the penalty spot, but the Uruguayan was remarkably prolific for Almeria and Benfica before his move to Anfield.

The striker has scored 12 and missed one of his 13 penalties - the same record as Mac Allister - but that miss did come for Liverpool earlier this season during a 4-1 win against Chelsea.

Nunez struck the post on that occasion, although he did slot one home from 12 yards against LASK in the Europa League earlier this season.

The 24-year-old hammered home all nine of his penalties prior to landing on Merseyside and he could still be an option for Liverpool in the future.

While yet to take a penalty for Liverpool, summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai also boasts an impressive record for previous clubs FC Liefering, RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig, as well as for the Hungarian national team.

Liverpool's No.8 has bagged 16 of his 17 spot kicks to date, only missing against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga during the 2021/22 season.

Szoboszlai has won 14 of the 16 games in which he has scored a penalty and generally favours a powerful low drive into the bottom corner.

However, with so many options ahead of him in the pecking order, it remains to be seen how many we will see him score for Liverpool in the coming years.

LIVERPOOL PLAYERS' PENALTY RECORD

  • Mohamed Salah - 39/49 (79.6%)
  • Alexis Mac Allister - 12/13 (92.3%)
  • Darwin Nunez - 12/13 (92.3%)
  • Dominik Szoboszlai - 16/17 (94.1%)
