"Hopefully it helps them stop smoking!" - Andy Robertson on lighters being thrown at him

Andy Robertson received some abuse from the Benfica fans last night and the Scottish left-back has responded in his usual cheeky way.

Benfica's atmosphere was absolutely extraordinary tonight and when Darwin Nunez made it 2-1, it reached a decibel level you rarely hear in modern-day football stadiums.

However, Luis Diaz's late goal silenced the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica for the final few minutes of the game.

Despite the Diaz goal, Benfica's more hardcore fans weren't going to show respect to the Liverpool players and when Robertson went to take a corner, they showed that.

The Scotland captain was booed but he was also the target of some airborne objects from the Benfica fans.

Thankfully they didn't hit Robbo but after the game, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, the Glaswegian tried to take a positive outlook on the incident.

"I had a few lighters thrown at me at the end of the game, hopefully, it helps them stop smoking!" said Robertson.

"So take the positives from it. But you should try not to throw things on the pitch because it can hurt people, luckily none hit me."

Anfield Watch Verdict

Luckily Robertson is ok but fans shouldn't stoop that low. We are all competitive and want our team to win but hurting someone is never the way to go.

Hopefully, Benfica will find the people responsible and punish them to the best of their abilities.

Apart from that incident, Robertson had a very good game and assisted Ibrahima Konate's opening goal.

Speaking after the game, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Robbo also acknowledged it was a tough game and that the team were a bit sloppy in the second half.

"It was a tough game - we were on top but we wanted to keep it tight. The goal lifted them - we started to get sloppy so the third goal was big."

Hopefully, the Reds can address that issue in the return leg at Anfield and not let Benfica produce a comeback.
