"His overall game" - Michael Owen on Salah's performance against Ajax

Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen has spoken about Mohamed Salah's performance against Ajax at Anfield.

The winger played well against the Dutch side last night. Salah scored the opening goal of the Champions League group stage match and he tracked back when required.

However, Owen was quite critical of Salah post-game.

"His overall game, he ran at his man a couple of times, looked sharp but his overall game was quite quiet," he told BT Sport, as quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account.

"I think he’s still one of the Liverpool players when Jurgen Klopp was talking about the previous game in Naples, he mentioned three players who could keep their head up.

"Luis Diaz had to be one of them, Harvey Elliott I think as well, Thiago (Alcantara) came off the bench and done well and you can’t criticise Alisson. Mo Salah is one of the leaders in the camp and his performances have just dipped lately, the goal will give him a boost of confidence."

Liverpool defeated Ajax 2-1.

Anfield Watch Verdict

We don't entirely agree with Owen's take regarding Salah. We thought that he played quite well.

Salah is a world-class forward. There is a reason why he has won three Premier League Golden Boots.

Therefore, when Salah plays well, we are not surprised. The Egyptian international is contracted until the summer of 2025.

With that being the case, the Anfield faithful will be able to sit back and watch Salah represent the club for at least a few more years.

Liverpool really needed to win last night. The Reds lost their opening Champions League group stage fixture 4-1 to Napoli away from home last week.

So, the Reds needed to respond and they did exactly that.
