"He's got that quality" - England U21 coach wants Curtis Jones to lift

England U21 manager Lee Carsley wants to see more from Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.

The Scouser is not a regular in Jurgen Klopp's starting XI. Jones only made 10 starts in the Premier League last season, which highlights that he wasn't performing well enough to hold his place.

Many Liverpool fans were hoping that the 21-year-old would force his way into Klopp's first XI last season, but, it wasn't to be the case.

However, it isn't just the Anfield faithful who want to see more from Jones. Carsley has put it on the youngster to lift his game.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, he told the Daily Mail the following: “It's important to me that Curtis doesn't play within himself. I think he can score more, I think he can assist more. When he gets in front of goal, he's got that quality.

“He needs to show it on a regular basis, consistently, for us. You'd like to have this conversation at the end of the camp where you're swooning about him, saying ‘what a player’. I still think he's building his reputation with the U21s in that respect.

“He's got energy, he's fast, he's got real power, he's got a real natural balance on the ball, he can take it either side. He's got the ability to go either way, off either side, which is a real skill to have and an attribute of a top player.

“I expect more from him. The players that are almost your middle of the road ones - when they do well, you're like ‘that was brilliant, well done’. But the really talented ones, when they do well you actually want them to do better.

“You push them more than the players that are striving to get there. I'm not saying Curtis is there yet but he has such ability, as have three or four of them, that he can really kick on.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Jones is only 21 years of age. So, he has plenty of time to become a regular first-teamer at Liverpool.

To be fair to Jones, he is up against some very good players. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho make up Liverpool's midfield three.

But, it is on Jones to improve and overtake the aforementioned names.
