"He’s been in decline for two years" - Jamie Carragher on Liverpool forward
Pundit Jamie Carragher has recently given his opinion on Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino.
The Reds signed the Brazilian from Hoffenheim for a transfer fee of £36.90 million back in the summer of 2015.
Since then, Firmino has found the back of the net 101 times and secured 77 assists in 334 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.
The 30-year-old has also helped the club win six major trophies and the Community Shield.
However, Carragher believes that the 30-year-old has been in decline for two years.
“He has been an amazing player for Liverpool, sure to be remembered as one of the main reasons for Liverpool’s success under Klopp,” he wrote for the Daily Telegraph, as quoted by Sportbible.
“But he’s been in decline for two years, his role gradually evolving to the point where last year he was back-up to Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane.
“Now he seems to be first pick as the false nine again.
“That cannot be right, even if he has performed well in some of the games so far.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
As Carragher pointed out, Firmino has had a reasonable start to the 2022-23 campaign.
The forward has scored three goals and registered three assists in seven appearances for Liverpool this season.
Firmino has also averaged a WhoScored player rating of 7.19 across the early stages of the 2022-23 campaign.
So, he might not be the player that he once was. But, Firmino has shown in recent times that he is still a handy footballer.
The Brazilian's contract expires at the conclusion of this season. We have no idea where his future lies.
