"He’s already there" - Former Scotland manager on Andy Robertson

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has claimed that Andy Robertson is one of the greatest ever Scottish defenders.

Scotland have had some great defenders over the years, but one pundit thinks that Liverpool's flying left-back is up there with the best.

“I think he’s already there," McLeish told Football Insider.

“Scotland have these great defenders now, Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson – two of the best left-backs that you’re ever likely to see.

“People were saying Robertson wouldn’t make it down in England and he was released a couple of times. People in Scotland didn’t rate him, even Celtic didn’t want him. They said he wasn’t good enough.

“He went to Queens Park Rangers and then he went down to Hull and all of a sudden he is what he is. For him to get that many assists is great.

“He plays like a wide midfield player but we know he’s not. You speak to Andy about creating chances and he says ‘first and foremost I’m a defender’. He cares more about not letting goals in than about scoring goals and I think that’s so good for a defender.

“With 200 games less than Baines, that’s not a bad achievement.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Robertson currently has 49 assists in 218 Premier League games next to his name. Leighton Baines, who has registered the most assists from defence during the Premier League era, has secured 53 in 420 games.

When the Scotland captain gets four more assists for Liverpool next season, which he's basically guaranteed to do, he'll overtake the former Everton full-back.

The fact that he's done that in 200 fewer games than Baines is absolutely crazy.

Hopefully Robertson can continue this upward spiral as he'll have Trent Alexander-Arnold breathing down his neck in a few years time as the Scouser looks to become the most explosive full-back in England.

Whatever number Robertson ends on, in my books, he'll go down as one of the best ever left-backs in Premier League history.
