"He’s a lot stronger in his body" - Jamie Carragher on Trent Alexander-Arnold's physique
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Reds right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has improved his physique in recent times.
The Scouser broke into the first-team back in October 2016.
Alexander-Arnold was only 18 years of age at the time. In other words, he was still a kid.
With that being the case, Alexander-Arnold was not as physically strong as his opponents in the early stages of his career.
But, Carragher believes that the 23-year-old has put some muscle on in recent times, which has ultimately improved his game.
“I think his defending has improved,” he told Gary Neville on Instagram (08:52). “He was fantastic in the FA Cup final.
“He looks like he has bulked up and filled out, whether he is getting bigger or stronger. Or he is on a weights programme.
“He looks a lot more like a real man in that shirt now. When he’s defending, he didn’t have the power. He will never have the full power of a Reece James or a Kyle Walker.
“But he’s a lot stronger in his body, so when somebody is running at him, he can get that shoulder and arm across. I have noticed that a lot more in the last four or five months, his defending improving.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
There is no denying that Alexander-Arnold has put some muscle on over the years. We completely agree with Carragher that the right-back is now better equipped to deal with opposition players as a result.
England's top division of football is very physical. Therefore, players need to possess a bit of muscle.
On another note, Alexander-Arnold has had a very good 2021-22 campaign. He has been averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.46 this season, which backs up the aforementioned argument.
