Former Liverpool player Phil Thompson has given his verdict on new-boy Fabio Carvalho.

The 68-year-old is a big fan of the attacking midfielder. Thompson believes that Carvalho is going to be a "star" for the Reds in the years to come.

He admires the 19-year-old's ability to assist his teammates.

“He is going to be a star, I can tell you. He’s got so much ability and he will shock everybody," he told the Off The Ball podcast, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

“I’ve seen enough of him for Fulham but what he brings and what I think Liverpool look at, as much as the goals, are the assists. I think they’re big things that people look at.

“Yes, you can help people with those but you have to have – you go back to David Beckham. People go ‘oh he picks people out’ – no he doesn’t. He puts the ball in the right area for strikers and that’s what Carvalho is.”

Carvalho could be Liverpool's next Philippe Coutinho. They are both similar players.

When Coutinho took to the pitch for the Reds, he made things happen. The Brazil international scored 54 goals and registered 45 assists in 201 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Hopefully Carvalho can produce similar numbers for the Reds. But, we would like to see him represent Liverpool for longer than what Coutinho did.

Only time will tell if that is to be the case. We wish Carvalho all the very best for this season and beyond.

On another note, Liverpool will face Crystal Palace at Anfield on Monday night (Premier League).
